Are the stars out tonight? Yes!
It's only the second day of 2018 and the desert is hopping with Hollywood stars, gathering for the opening gala of the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Now in its 28th year, the festival has come to be seen as a bellweather for the rest of Hollywood's awards season, as well as a place to be seen by adoring fans who've been camped out on the sidewalk for hours in hopes of getting a selfie, or even an autograph. This year's honorees include Mary J. Blige, Timothee Chalamet, Jessica Chastain, Willem Dafoe, Gal Gadot, Holly Hunter, Allison Janney, Gary Oldman, Sam Rockwell, Saoirse Ronan, and the film The Shape of Water. Stephen Spielberg, Meryl Streep, and Tom Hanks will also be in town during the festival for a special screening of The Post, which isn't even in theaters yet.
Speaking of newspapers, our local Desert Sun and the USA Today Network have a handy guide for fans on getting the most out of the gala and especially the red carpet.
The gala was sold out long before I started shopping for a dress, so I've decided to watch from home. You can, too. If you're in the desert along with all those stars, coverage starts at 5 p.m. on our local TV stations. (If you're not here, you might want to ask yourself why not.) Wherever you are, you can tune in to the live stream of festival coverage online. UPDATE: An additional live stream from the red carpet is available from always-classy Palm Springs Life magazine, and The Desert Sun will provide a live stream of the awards gala itself beginning at approximately 8 p.m. PST. We will also be live-tweeting the event, beginning at 5 p.m., at @blogpalmsprings, where we're sure to be retweeting some of the best comments of the evening from @cactushugs.
The festival continues through January 15. Here's a schedule of all the showings. Locals - and by that we mean anyone who lives within 100 miles or so - know that if you can only catch one day, it should be the "best of" screenings at the end of the festival.
